Roosevelt Institute | Pipeline, a nationwide network for young professionals, is dedicated to building a community of young progressives, engaging them in the progressive movement throughout their early careers, and fostering their leadership potential.

GenLead 2012: Chicago is the inaugural conference for the Pipeline’s new nationwide progressive leadership academy. This two-day intensive conference is designed to prepare young people to advance as innovative leaders in their workplaces, their communities, and in the progressive movement by exposing them to two days of intensive training, education, networking, and workshops. The goal of the program is to provide the tools and the background that participants need to excel in their careers and create progressive change throughout their lifetimes.

Agenda

The first day of GenLead will focus on providing conference participants with context for the policy trends and outcomes that have shaped the country over the last 30 years and the challenges that our generation must be prepared to face and overcome. It will also provide opportunities for hearing from and networking with current leaders across industry lines who are spearheading the effort to create progressive change in their workplaces and throughout the country.

The second day of GenLead will build on the background established during the previous day by providing training sessions on the skills needed to develop each participant’s personal narrative, identify the issue areas they want to engage with, design strategies for personal advancement, and prepare them for leadership roles.

Day 1: The Context To Lead, Phase I

Hear from NBC newswoman Carol Marin, economist Jeff Madrick, and Roosevelt Institute Vice President Hilary Doe as they speak to the importance of young professional community involvement and provide background information on the challenges and opportunities that our generation will have to lead through, based on trends over the last 30 years and the pressures facing our communities, our economy, and the country.

What We’re Up Against: Hear from Mike Konczal, creator of progressive economics blog Rortybomb, as he continues the conversation started during lunch on the challenges and opportunities that our generation will have to lead through, based on trends over the last 30 years and the pressures facing our communities, our economy, and the country.

Our Progressive Movement: Owning the possibilities and embracing leadership—an overview of the progressive movement’s beginnings, the challenges facing the movement today, and the unique characteristics of our generation that will help us to define our own way forward.

9:00am Breakfast, Introduction and Why Does Leadership Matter?:Welcome presentation and overview of the previous day, along with a high-level overview of the ways that Millennials lead.

10:00am Elective Breakout Sessions I:Going Deep on Today’s Pressing Issues

12:15pm Lunch and Designing your Personal Narrative:The ability to explain why you care and are capable to make change is the first step in creating the world you want.

2:30pm Designing A Lifetime of Action:How do you map out your commitment to action in this space? One-on-one attention and group work-shopping of your strategy for creating change and your plan to be a leader
